Chasing the Winter Sun: Your Guide to a Caribbean Cruise (with Virgin Voyages)

Chasing the Winter Sun…

Ok, so when winter rolls in nothing says “tropical reset” quite like stepping onto a yacht-inspired ship, sinking your toes into warm waves at a new island each day and swapping freezing frost for lush palm trees!

Here at Lucusta Travel, we believe in curating experiences that feel connected to people, places and real joy. And for the kind of grown-up luxe-but-fun escape that feels like a proper treat, Virgin Voyages is absolutely at the top of our recommendation list.

Whether you're dreaming of a weekend getaway or a longer island-hopping adventure, Virgin’s “Always Included Luxury” concept makes things beautifully simple: your food, Wi-Fi, entertainment, fitness and gratuities are included (no hidden speciality restaurant upcharges or surprise bills). The only extra being how much you want to spend on dreamy cocktails and champagne in the bars or speciality coffee, and you can determine exactly how much this is by loading your own bar tab. Their ships are adults-only (18+), creating a vibe that’s relaxed, social and entirely free of sticky-fingered chaos.

What’s Onboard the Virgin Voyages Experience

  • Ships & Atmosphere: Virgin has four “Lady Ships” — Scarlet Lady, Resilient Lady, Brilliant Lady, and Valiant Lady. These aren’t mega-liners; they feel intimate, stylish, yacht-inspired and warm — great for making new friends or simply relaxing in a ‘grown-up playground’.

  • Dining: Forget buffets. There are 20+ speciality eateries that are all included in your fare. Think Korean BBQ, truffle pasta, hibachi crudo and more, all curated by Michelin-starred chefs. No fixed dining times, no “main dining room” fuss and fighting everyone else to the best seat in the house!

  • Drinks: Essential drinks (water, soft drinks, coffee, tea) are part of your fare. There are also plenty of bars around the ship with creative cocktail menus if you fancy something more special. (Mine’s an El Capitano’s Gun Powder in the Loose Cannon Bar!)

  • Wellness & Fitness: Virgin Voyages loves wellness — free group fitness classes (yoga, HIIT, cycling), a running track circling the upper deck, a full outdoor athletic club (box, basketball, yoga) — all included. It’s enough to make you want to move in and live onboard permanently! Plus, the Redemption Spa is a real treat: thermal suite, mud room, saunas, plunge pools and everything else in-between! (THIS is your retreat for the new year!)

  • Entertainment: You won’t find your standard cruise shows here. Virgin’s onboard entertainment is modern, quirky and inclusive: immersive performances in the Red Room, themed parties (hello, pyjama parties and the infamous Scarlet Night - a party across the whole ship!), karaoke rooms and DJ-led nights in The Manor nightclub. Smaller entertainment is held in the form of sip and paint sessions, quiz nights or you can just head down to the games area and enjoy old-school Pac-Man arcade games and classic boardgames – there really is something for everyone.

  • Unique Touches: The ships are home to the only tattoo parlours at sea (Squid Ink), which we have personally tested with a couple of nautical themed tattoos of a compass and a lobster – see our website for full pictures! They also have a barbershop, a blow-dry salon and lots of luxury shopping!

Virgin Voyages + Winter Caribbean: What to Expect

If you choose a Virgin Voyages cruise for your winter sun escape, you’ll likely be sailing on the Brilliant Lady (or her sister ships), offering 4–10 night voyages during the winter season. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to escape the winter blues with a 10-night holiday somewhere tropical and sunny!

Cruises depart from Miami or Puerto Rico and hop between Caribbean gems, giving you a mix of sun, sea, and island discovery…

Here’s what makes the cruise itself feel extra special:

  • Adults-only Zen: Without children on board, this is perfect for couples who wish to celebrate big anniversaries! No children, no mess, no drama!

  • Value built-in: Since many of the usual add-ons (food, entertainment, fitness) are included, you can budget more confidently — (no more disagreements about budgeting or spending and instead more time for couples’ massages and cocktails at sunsets!)

  • Wellness meets play: You can sweat it out in a boxing ring in the outdoor athletic club, swing on ocean-facing net swings and relax, or lounge in a cabana by the adults-only pool with an endless flow of drinks!

Pros and Cons of Cruising with Virgin Voyages (in Winter)

As fabulous as winter cruises are, with the breadth of variety and options to choose from, let’s also be aware of what some cons might be. So, let’s break it down…

Pros:

  1. Exceptional value — With so many things already included, you avoid nasty surprise spends and can budget much more easily.

  2. Luxury without pretension — High-quality dining and chic design, but no formal dress code (except for special nights) and a relaxed, fun atmosphere.

  3. Inclusive wellness & entertainment — Great fitness options, spa and creative entertainment, all included in the fare.

Cons:

  1. Some premium extras — Spa treatments, top-tier Rockstar suites and specialty experiences (like some shore excursions) still cost extra.

  2. Once you have sailed with Virgin you are unlikely to want to go back to ‘Classic Cruises’ ever again! They really have reinvented cruising in their own special Virgin way.

  3. You may not have enough annual leave for all the Virgin cruises you will want to book with us once you have tried it once.

Why Virgin Voyages Is a Perfect Fit for Your Winter Sun Escape

By pairing a Virgin Voyages cruise with a Caribbean itinerary, you’re effectively getting the best of both worlds: the sun-drenched beauty of Caribbean islands (think Barbados, St. Lucia, Aruba … more on those in a moment!) and the elevated, adult-focused, all-included experience that Virgin does so well.

When winter hits us hard in the UK, when the days grow short, the jumpers get thicker and your morning coffee begins to feel like a survival tool rather than a beverage, there’s only that one sensible solution: run away to the sun!

As your friendly independent travel concierge here at Lucusta Travel, we are all about helping you find experiences that feel warm inside and out. And nothing beats the bliss of swapping frosty winds for ocean breezes. A winter sun cruise through the Caribbean offers relaxation, culture and indulgence wrapped up in an itinerary that takes all the stress out of planning - that’s our job (and we love it!).

Below, you’ll find our pick of the Top 3 Winter Destinations to explore during, before or after a cruise - each with a little intro about why travellers fall in love with each island, plus three pros and cons to help you decide which island suits your dreamy escape.

1. Barbados – Sunshine, Seafood & Seriously Good Vibes

Barbados is the kind of island that knows exactly what you’re looking for: warmth, charm and an unmistakably “holiday” feeling that hits you before your suitcase even reaches baggage claim! Loved for its picture-perfect beaches and lively culture, Barbados is a favourite winter escape for travellers who want a beautiful blend of relaxation with a little bit of buzz. Just picture yourselves strolling hand-in-hand through historic Bridgetown, or snorkelling with turtles, or simply lounging on Crane Beach with a rum punch in hand, this island delivers that perfect “I never want to leave” energy.

Pros

  1. Beaches for every mood – From dramatic Atlantic surf spots to calm Caribbean waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

  2. Warm, welcoming locals – Barbadians are famously friendly and love sharing stories, tips and the island’s best food. (Just don’t clock-watch, a good story from a local can last an hour or so!)

  3. Food heaven – Flying fish, macaroni pie, fresh seafood—even the street food is incredible.

Cons

  1. Barbados can get busy during peak winter season – Especially in hotspots like St. Lawrence Gap, so just check with us on anything you might be querying.

  2. More expensive than some other islands – Premium experiences come with premium price tags and remember this is outside of your Cruise spend!

  3. Traffic around Bridgetown can be slow – Especially on cruise-ship days.

2. St. Lucia – Romance, Rainforests & Relaxation

St. Lucia has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the Caribbean’s most breathtaking islands. Think emerald mountains, peaceful volcanic beaches and luxurious views that seem to follow you everywhere. (It’s time to clear your grid on Instagram!) St Lucia is especially popular among couples and honeymooners, and yes, big anniversaries that deserve celebrating! From the iconic Piton mountains to lush botanical gardens and healing sulphur springs, St. Lucia blends natural beauty with the charm of a laid-back island that invites you to slow down and breathe…

Pros

  1. Stunning scenery – Some of the most dramatic and photogenic landscapes in the Caribbean.

  2. Great mix of adventure and relaxation – Zip-lining, hiking, hot springs and tranquil beaches all in one place. (We are big lovers of the zip-lining!)

  3. Wonderful local culture – Friendly markets, Caribbean music and delicious Creole cuisine.

Cons

  1. Hilly terrain – Some excursions involve steeper climbs or longer drives along winding roads, and the correct footwear is key.

  2. Beaches can be smaller – St. Lucia’s volcanic coastline offers charm, but not always vast stretches of sand. Sometimes beaches can be a little crowded, or you need to head out for the day to find quieter spaces (although we can personally recommend some great hotels with their own slice of heaven for a beach for a pre or post cruise stay!)

  3. Popular spots can fill quickly – Especially attractions like the mud baths and the Pitons viewpoint.

3. Aruba – Breezy, Bright & Effortlessly Easy

Aruba is the Caribbean’s golden child when it comes to winter sun. Sitting just outside the hurricane belt and blessed with nearly constant sunshine, it’s a dream for visitors wanting guaranteed warmth. The island has a relaxed, welcoming vibe and fantastic beaches - Eagle Beach alone has won enough awards to fill a trophy cabinet! Yes, seriously! With calm waters, lively casinos, colourful shops and plenty of water sports, Aruba is ideal for couples wanting a sun-soaked escape with plenty of things to do!

Pros

  1. Incredibly reliable weather – Blue skies and sunshine are practically a daily guarantee.

  2. Perfect beaches – Wide, sugar-soft-sandy beaches – pure bliss.

  3. Easy to explore – Compact size and well-organised tours make island-hopping simple.

Cons

  1. Can feel more commercial – Especially in resort-dense areas like Palm Beach.

  2. Less lush than other islands – Aruba’s desert-like landscape surprises some visitors expecting dense tropical scenery.

  3. Popular with winter travellers – Sorry to say that some areas can get crowded in high season.

Why a Winter Caribbean Stay/Cruise Is Pure Magic

A cruise is truly the easiest way to sample multiple islands without the hassle of organising flights, hotels, or transfers. You wake up in a new destination each day, step off the ship into sunshine and adventure, and return in the evening to gourmet dining, entertainment, and the soft lull of the sea. No stress. No drama.

Combining a pre or post cruise stay is a great way to relax fully and give yourself time to truly embrace all the warmth and charm the Caribbean has to offer.

If you’d like help choosing the right itinerary, cruise line or cabin then we are here to help plan that big holiday that is well-deserved (and well-earned!) - anyone got a big birthday or anniversary coming up and want to celebrate in style?

As your travel concierge at Lucusta Travel, we love this combination for travellers who truly want to reset, connect and enjoy — without running around checking off “things to do” or being surprised by hidden costs.
