Short Haul vs Long Haul Travel: What’s the Difference and How to Make the Most of Both
Short Haul vs Long Haul Travel
Whether you’re planning a quick city break or the trip of a lifetime across the globe, both types of travel – long haul and short haul - offer unique perks, challenges and preparation. Do you know which type of travel you prefer and what’s the difference other than the obvious amount of time spent on the plane flying?
Here, we lift the hood (or should we say lift the wing!) and explain the difference of both short haul and long haul flying…buckle up!
What Do “Short Haul” and “Long Haul” Actually Mean?
In simple terms:
Short haul flights typically last up to 3–4 hours. From the UK, think European city breaks, weekend escapes, or quick sunshine getaways closer to home.
Long haul flights usually last 6+ hours and often cross continents or ocean. Dream destinations, bucket-list trips or big family adventures ticks this box.
Both are wonderful in their own way — they just require slightly different expectations and preparation.
The Joys of Short Haul Travel
Short haul travel is the ultimate instant adventure. It’s quick, flexible and often easier to slot into busy lives. If you’re someone who is – dare we say – afraid of flying, or a little bit anxious once on the plane – then maybe this is the one for you…it still offers plenty of adventure, sun, sea and wonderful memories to be had! Check out our list of pros/cons for short haul flying…
Pros of Short Haul Flights:
1. Less travel fatigue
You can leave in the morning and be sipping coffee in a new city by lunchtime. No major jet lag, no huge time zone changes. (The joy of waking up in one city and going to bed in another, all in one day, is one of our favourite parts of travelling!)
2. Lower costs (generally)
Flights are often cheaper, especially if you’re flexible with dates or can travel off-peak.
3. Perfect for short breaks
Weekend trips and spontaneous getaways are totally doable. (Love this to help break up the monotony of work/life!)
4. Easier packing
You can often get away with cabin baggage only (as long as you limit the pairs of shoes you need), meaning no waiting at baggage reclaim
5. Frequent deals and budget airlines
Short haul routes are competitive so there are often great offers to be had, and we get access to extra special trade only deals you can benefit from!
Cons of Short Haul Flights:
1. Less onboard comfort
Meals, entertainment and space are usually minimal — especially on budget airlines. We can help manage your trips to make them as comfortable as possible though.
2. Strict baggage rules
Budget fares often don’t include luggage or seat selection as standard. So, when packing it’s good to plan exactly what you need and pack smartly.
3. Airports can feel rushed
Because flights are short, the airport experience can feel like the longest part of the journey. But if you’re someone like me, I still like getting to the airport at least 2 hours ahead of time, minimum, so that I don’t feel rushed. We also like to skip through fast track security to reduce any stress in the airport – just ask us about adding this onto your trips!
Perks to look out for on Short Haul Flights
Many travellers don’t realise short haul can still include perks if you know where to look. This is where Lucusta Travel can help you – as we specialise in travel consultancy, with excellent customer service at the heart of everything we do. We love to help you plan the perks that you wouldn’t necessarily know about if you were to book your holiday on your own:
Airline loyalty points and frequent flyer miles still apply.
Priority boarding and seat selection upgrades can be surprisingly affordable and make the experience more enjoyable.
Airport Lounges can be added at most airports now – even smaller regional ones. A quiet space with food and drink before a flight makes for such a relaxing experience – who wants to sit on hard bench seats surrounded by screaming kids while waiting for the flight!
Package holidays often include better baggage allowances than flight-only bookings, and we take the stress out of the planning by working out which options best suit your needs.
Small upgrades can make a really big difference on a short haul trip.
Preparing for Short Haul Travel
A little planning goes a long way:
Check baggage rules carefully. Budget airlines vary wildly and they can be really strict – we have all heard about the people being made to pay to put cabin baggage in the hold!
Download boarding passes in advance to avoid airport queues. We manage all the check ins for our clients and will supply your boarding passes well ahead of time. We also encourage clients to download the Airline Apps to manage these or add them to phone wallets for easy access in the airport. Some airlines will not even accept paper copies of boarding passes anymore and everything needs to be done in the app!
Bring snacks and entertainment. Not all airlines offer onboard options. (If you have a little one, this can be a game-changer when you need to give them some healthy snacks mid-flight!)
Plan for security checks. Security queue times can be unpredictable, but Fast Track lanes are so much quicker and less stressful.
We go through all these points with you ahead of travelling, so you know exactly what to expect – you are in safe hands with us.
The Magic of Long Haul Travel
Long haul trips feel special. They’re often the journeys we dream about and plan for months (or years!) in advance. We personally love a long haul flight – it gives you time to switch off, away from the nagging to-do lists and allows you guilt-free time to watch endless movies! Here are our pros/cons for long hauls:
Pros of Long Haul Flights:
1. More comfort and service
Long haul flights typically include:
Meals and drinks
Seatback entertainment (hello Traitors catch-up!)
Blankets and pillows
More legroom (generally)
2. Greater sense of adventure
You’re heading somewhere truly different — new cultures, climates and experiences.
3. Better baggage allowance options
Many long haul fares include checked luggage, so the variety of the x20 different t-shirts and x6 pairs of shorts is usually ok. A lot of airlines are also introducing more flexibility with their fares, so if you don’t need quite as much baggage you can opt for a ‘lite’ fare and we can just add on exactly what you need.
4. Upgrade opportunities
Premium economy, business class and upgrade bids can sometimes be excellent value. It’s worth checking with us what deals we have access to, as we get special agent rates on long haul routes you won’t find yourself online!
5. The journey becomes part of the experience
You settle in, watch films, read books and switch into holiday mode.
Cons of Long Haul Flights:
1. Jet lag
Crossing time zones can leave you feeling out of sync for a few days.
2. Higher cost
Flights are typically more expensive (but sooooo worth it!)
3. Planning required
Visas, vaccinations and additional documentation may be needed (this is where Lucusta Travel eases the pain and provides advice on all the different rules and regulations)
4. Travel fatigue
Sitting for long periods can be tiring or boring without preparation. So, download the podcasts or series, charge your laptop, bring a good book or magazine and don’t forget snacks are key to winning the long haul flight!
Perks to look out for on Long Haul Flights
Long haul travel often comes with hidden bonuses:
Upgrade auctions or bids — airlines sometimes offer discounted upgrades before departure, so it’s always worth checking and don’t be afraid to ask at the desk!
Frequent flyer benefits — long flights earn more miles - we always use our airmiles to pay for seat selection now most airlines charge for this on long haul flights.
Better seat selection options — extra legroom, exit rows or premium economy upgrades.
These perks can turn a long haul journey into a genuinely enjoyable experience and helps get you in the holiday mood 30,000 miles in the sky!
Preparing for Long Haul Travel:
Preparation is the key to arriving refreshed instead of exhausted and stressed. It’s so easy to get caught up in the magic of your holiday planning that we can often neglect the boring bits like travel insurance or visas! Again, at Lucusta Travel this is where we help take that stress off your hands, so all you need to think about is what to wear for your first night out on the town!
Before You Fly:
Choose seats carefully. We will discuss preferences at time of booking and make sure the right seats are secured, so you don’t end up sat next to the toilet for a long flight!
Check passport validity and visas early. Each country has its own passport requirements, and some can be a little tricky to understand if you have an older UK passport. We always run through any visa requirements for the country you are visiting and can help walk you through the application processes.
Arrange travel insurance. A lot of people have insurance with their banks, but it is always worth checking the level of cover provided, especially for those bigger trips. We can also offer a comprehensive insurance if you don’t have a policy in place
Research destination health requirements. We will run through requirements with you well ahead of departure, so you can space out appointments – it's not good to get too many jabs in one go!
What to Pack in Your Cabin Bag:
Your long haul “comfort kit” should include:
Neck pillow and eye mask
Reusable water bottle
Moisturiser and lip balm (This is key for me - cabin air is dry!)
Headphones (I don’t like using the airline headphones)
Compression socks
Spare clothes and essentials / wet wipes / toothbrush etc
A good book, or films/series/podcast downloaded on phone – we have had customers with broken TV’s stuck on a 12-hour flight with no entertainment before!
Think of your cabin bag as your survival kit for the journey.
Jet Lag Tips That Actually Work
Jet lag is often the biggest difference between short and long haul travel. However, I’d not choose a far away destination because of the jet lag I might end up enduring. But just in case you suffer with the lag, maybe try these simple strategies:
Adjust sleep times slightly before departure.
Change your time zone on watch/phone as soon as you board, then try to eat and sleep to the new time instead of home.
Stay hydrated and avoid too much alcohol.
Get sunlight and fresh air when you arrive.
Resist long daytime naps on day one (this one is key!), getting into the right time zone straight away is hard but worth it.
Some people swear by melatonin on long haul flights– we are going to give this a go on our next trip!
Within a few days your body will catch up, and if not, the adventure and sun help take the ‘sting’ out of it!
