Top 3 Tips to Make the Most of Your Delayed Flights
How to turn travel lemons into airport lemonade…
Nobody plans a holiday and thinks, “I hope my flight gets delayed.” Delayed flights sit firmly in the “less glamorous side of travel” category, somewhere between overpacked suitcases and accidentally booking a hotel room with a “partial sea view” that turns out to be one determined glimpse of water behind a car park.
But here’s the thing: delays happen. Weather, technical checks, busy airports, air traffic, yadda yadda yadda. Modern travel is a wonderful thing, but sometimes it hiccups. But a delayed flight doesn’t have to derail your mood.
At Lucusta Travel, we’re firm believers in making the most of every part of the journey - even the unexpected bits. So, next time you find yourself staring at a departure board that keeps changing from “On Time” to “Delayed”, here are our top three tips for turning frustration into something a little more positive.
1. Treat It as Bonus “You Time”
When was the last time you had permission to sit still for a few uninterrupted hours?
For many of us, life runs at full speed. Emails, errands, notifications, calendars full of things labelled “urgent.” A flight delay, while undeniably inconvenient and annoying, can also hand you something surprisingly rare: unexpected downtime.
Instead of pacing dramatically around the terminal (tempting, we know), lean into the downtime.
If you haven’t booked a lounge beforehand, it is always worth checking if they have any walk in availability. Most lounges will accept walk in bookings if they are not full, then you have food and drink on tap, decent WIFI and comfortable seating to wait out the delay.
Take advantage of the fact that you are still on British soil and still have access to your mobile phone carrier to download that book you’ve been meaning to read for six months. Download ahead of time for the plane and watch the guilty-pleasure series you never want to admit to loving. Put your headphones on and simply people-watch — airports are, after all, one of the world’s finest theatres of human behaviour. (This one is one of my personal favourites!)
If you’re travelling with friends and family, then delays can even become quality time. Card games, travel quizzes, planning your first meal when you arrive, having yet another airport pint… suddenly the airport lounge becomes part of the adventure rather than a waiting room of doom.
And if you’re travelling solo? There’s something wonderfully indulgent about ordering an overpriced airport coffee and doing absolutely nothing productive for an hour.
2. Make Friends with Your Airport App (and Your Travel Consultant!)
Flight delays feel far worse when you’re stuck in uncertainty. Information is your best travel companion.
Before you travel, make sure you’ve downloaded your airline’s app. Many airlines provide real-time updates, gate changes, rebooking options and notifications directly to your phone, often before the airport announcements catch up. We’ve been in too many airports where you can’t even hear the announcements over the high-pitch tones of travellers nearby. So, downloading the app is a great little extra piece of mind when waiting for delayed flights.
This is also where working with an independent travel consultant can really shine. At Lucusta Travel, we know that travel isn’t always perfectly smooth — and that’s okay. When plans shift, having someone in your corner can make a huge difference. And this is where we shine! Whether it’s helping you understand your options, checking alternative routes, or simply offering reassurance that yes, you will still get to your destination, support matters, even before wheels go up.
A little preparation also goes a long way so keep essentials in your hand luggage: a charger, snacks, medication, a refillable water bottle, an extra jumper in case the aircon is up high….anything that supports you and the way you like to travel.
Think of it as your “Delay Survival Kit” — practical, comforting and slightly snack-heavy!
3. Reframe the Story: You’re Collecting Travel Tales
Let’s be honest — the journeys that go perfectly smoothly rarely become the stories we tell.
Nobody gathers friends around to say, “You won’t believe it… my flight boarded exactly on time, and everything went entirely according to plan.”
But delayed flights? Those become anecdotes…
…The unexpected conversation with a fellow traveller from the other side of the world, who funnily enough grew up around the corner from you when you were little (yes, this actually happened to us when we sat next to a stranger in a coffee shop waiting for our flight times to update!). Or discovering the surprisingly hidden excellent bar hidden in the far end corner of Terminal 3, where you came across the most delicious cocktail ingredients you ever tasted and this has now inspired your drinks list for the party you're planning later in the year! Learning to reframe the tedious story of ‘Annoyed flight Delay’ into ‘More moments of Gratitude’ only helps to aid you on your upcoming holiday adventure!
Travel isn’t just about arriving. It’s about the stories, the detours, the unpredictability, the moments you didn’t plan for but somehow remember most vividly.
Of course, nobody is suggesting you celebrate every delay with confetti and a flashmob. Disruption can be stressful, especially when you’re juggling connections, family travel, or important plans. But mindset matters, especially when you’re gearing up to holiday mode. Shifting from “This has ruined everything” to “Okay… how can I make this easier, calmer, or even enjoyable?” can completely change your experience.
Travel teaches flexibility in ways few other experiences do. Sometimes the lesson arrives wrapped in an extra two hours at Gate 14. And that’s ok (sometimes!)
Final Boarding Call…
Delayed flights may never make anyone’s list of holiday highlights, but they don’t have to steal the joy from your journey either.
A little preparation, a flexible mindset, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected can transform airport limbo into something surprisingly manageable. And remember, we’re here to help you navigate the planned moments and the unexpected ones — because every great journey starts at the airport, if not before!
