Wellness Travel in 2026: Why More People Are Choosing Holidays That Heal
Wellness Travel in 2026: Why More People Are Choosing Holidays That Heal
I’m taking a moment here to pause and ask you – ‘how are you? Like, really – How. Are. You.?’ I’m asking this because after a hard few months of our own, with the stresses, demands and some recent disappointments life has thrown us, I’m feeling the need for some R&R.
So, again, ‘how are YOU?’
Our lives have never been more connected, yet many of us have never felt more exhausted. Long working hours, constant notifications, social media and busy family schedules, with the added pressure to always be available, many of us are left feeling mentally drained and physically fatigued. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time to re-charge – and when you do get that moment, be it an evening to yourself, that one evening just isn’t going to cut it. It’s like you need the time to chill, relax and switch off FIRST, and THEN you need the actual time away from the digital world with the demands of life to FULLY feel the re-charge. How crazy is that!?
Time-poor? Check. Juggle of work / life commitments? Check. Constant to-do-lists / reminders / emails & notifications? Check. Add in poor sleep, rising stress levels and very little time to truly switch off, it's easy to understand why there is a huge uplift in wellness holidays, more than just a wellness spa day away. Maybe that ‘traditional beach holiday’ is going to have to sit on the back-burner this year (or possibly delay for some winter sun later in the year!?)
We are seeing more travellers looking for something with a deeper purpose. They want holidays that restore their wellbeing, improve their health and allow them to reconnect with themselves. This shift has seen wellness travel become one of the fastest-growing sectors in the travel industry, with people seeking experiences that leave them feeling healthier, calmer and more energised than when they arrived, ready to face life upon their return!
Here are five of the biggest wellness travel trends shaping 2026.
Digital Detox Retreats
Many of us spend over eight hours a day looking at screens, making it difficult to truly unwind. Digital detox holidays encourage guests to disconnect from phones, emails and social media, replacing them with mindfulness, reading, nature walks and meaningful conversations, whilst making new friends along the way.
One of Europe's finest examples is Eremito Hotelito del Alma in Umbria, Italy, where there are no televisions in the rooms and the focus is on simplicity, silence and reflection.
Why we love it:
Encourages a complete break from technology, helping to reduce stress and mental fatigue (always needed!)
Set in the peaceful Umbrian countryside, perfect for mindfulness and quiet reflection.
Offers a unique experience centred on wellbeing, simplicity and reconnecting with yourself.
Forest Retreats
Scientific studies have shown that spending time amongst trees can help lower stress hormones, reduce blood pressure and improve overall wellbeing. Forest retreats allow guests to immerse themselves in peaceful woodland surroundings while enjoying spa treatments, outdoor activities and mindful relaxation.
Arctic Bath in Swedish Lapland combines Scandinavian wellness with breathtaking forests and tranquil waters, offering one of the world's most unique wellness experiences as part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group.
Why we love it:
Surrounded by pristine forests and waterways provides complete tranquillity, it truly is an oasis of wellness floating on the Lule River (this setting and backdrop always wins my heart!)
Combines luxury accommodation with authentic Nordic wellness traditions.
Offers unforgettable experiences, including forest bathing, spa treatments, gastronomic adventures and the chance to witness the Northern Lights during winter.
Sleep-Focused Hotels
Quality sleep has become something many of us struggle to achieve. (Believe me, it’s something I’ve struggled with for years!) Recognising this, a growing number of luxury wellness resorts now offer specialist sleep programmes designed to improve sleep quality through expert consultations, nutrition, relaxation therapies and carefully designed sleep environments.
SHA Wellness Clinic in Alicante, Spain, has become internationally recognised for its personalised sleep recovery programmes and holistic approach to wellbeing.
Why we love it:
World-renowned specialists helping guests improve sleep quality and overall health (I’m personally wondering if you can just sleep the entire time!?)
Personalised wellness programmes tailored to individual needs and lifestyles.
Combines medical expertise with luxury surroundings for long-lasting results.
Nature Escapes
Sometimes the greatest luxury is simply space, silence and fresh air. Nature escapes encourage travellers to leave behind busy cities and reconnect with spectacular natural landscapes, whether that's mountains, forests or coastlines.
Nestled in the wilderness of British Columbia, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge offers unforgettable experiences surrounded by ancient rainforest, wildlife and pristine coastline, making it the perfect destination to truly switch off.
Why we love it:
Immerses guests in one of Canada's most spectacular wilderness settings (Canada has one of the most beautiful wallpapers to life I have ever seen!)
Encourages a slower pace of life with outdoor adventures and wildlife encounters.
Luxury safari-style accommodation that blends comfort with nature.
Yoga Holidays
Yoga holidays continue to grow in popularity as travellers seek balance for both body and mind. Combining daily yoga, meditation, nutritious cuisine and peaceful surroundings, these retreats help guests return home feeling physically stronger and mentally refreshed.
Set amongst the hills of Sri Lanka, Santani Wellness Kandy is widely regarded as one of Asia's leading wellness retreats, offering personalised yoga programmes alongside holistic wellness treatments.
Why we love it:
Mulit award-winning wellness retreat with breathtaking mountain views.
Personalised yoga, meditation and Ayurvedic-inspired wellness programmes.
A peaceful adults-only environment designed to nurture both body and mind (they had me at ‘adult-only’!)
Your Wellness Journey Starts Here
No two travellers are the same, which is why no two wellness holidays should be the same either. Whether you're dreaming of a peaceful forest retreat, a luxury sleep programme, a technology-free escape or a rejuvenating yoga holiday, choosing the right destination can make all the difference.
At Lucusta Travel, we love to take the time to understand what wellbeing means to you – and why you need the holiday you want now and who with. They ‘why’ is the most important thing. We specialise in creating personalised holidays (from a wellness escape or a safari in Africa, we will take the time to work with you to find you the most perfect fit for you and your soul right now). It’s not just about matching your budget or finding you the best dates to fly, it’s about taking the stress out of planning your wellness escape so you can focus on relaxing, recharging and returning home feeling like the very best version of yourself.
If you're ready to invest in your wellbeing, we'd love to help you plan your perfect wellness escape.
And FYI – I just might book one of these myself, I’ve kinda got my eye on the SHA Wellness Clinic with the dream of a few decent nights sleep!
